NEW DELHI: CPM general secretary has said leader did not have the “political understanding” of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.

Smarting under Mr Gandhi’s remark that Marxism was a dead ideology, Mr Karat said, "Rahul does not know the history of Marxism. He should know that Karl Marx, the main protagonist of the Communist movement, was born in the 19th century and not the 20th century," Mr Karat was quoted by PTI as saying at a public meeting in Patna on Friday.

The Congress leader, during his visit to West Bengal, had said the Left Front government in the state was "blinded by a dead ideology, which has failed world-wide, including in Cuba."

Refuting his remarks, Mr Karat said the Left movement was there to stay. "In any case, Gandhi does not have the political understanding that the first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter Indira Gandhi had," he said.

While chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee refused to respond to Mr Gandhi’s criticism of the Left, other CPM leaders in the state tried to give him some lessons in history.

CPM central committee member Mohammed Salim said he should read his great grandfather’s works. "He is from the Nehru family. He should read Nehru's views on socialism. We are happy that he has talked about Subhas Chandra Bose. Congress did not allow him to work despite being elected president. They don't even mention him. But, if he has to talk about Subhas Chandra Bose, then his socialism, five-year plans also have to be spoken about. Rahul should decide whether he is a Nehruvian, Gandhian or a Manmohanic," Mr Salim said.
